The HEAT! Plus a trial of new Members’ Open Studio sessions

Kia ora hot-potters (hotters??😉 )

How’s this weather?! It’s certainly affecting us here in the studio, and we want to take a moment to suggest that if you’re coming in to pot, it’s a great idea to keep hydrated and take some breaks to get some air and cool down.

The temperatures and humidity in here are getting pretty high and we’re keen to keep you all safe! Do what you need to do to stay cool! But unfortunately, no fans sorry, as we need to be aware of the clay dust situation that creates. For my heat-challenged friends, I can recommend a cool wet towel on the back of the neck 😉

Trialling Saturday Afternoon Members’ Open Studio Sessions

We know that our members have been asking for more times to use the studio that are outside of traditional business hours. So, at the suggestion of and with the help of our beautiful volunteers, we will trial making this possible on Saturday afternoons, following the usual Play With Clay session, and provided there is a willing volunteer to cover the session.

Lovely Lydia Farrel has volunteered to facilitate the first Saturday afternoon Members’ Open Studio session this Saturday the 8th of Feb, 1-4pm. If you stick around after PWC for the session, or if you just drop in from 1-4pm, show Lydia some love (and anyone else who volunteers in future!) as it’s only with the help of passionate members like them, that these opportunities are made possible 💖

Please note that all the standard charges apply for these sessions, so a $10 studio fee or card clip, plus firing/glazing prices as normal.

Workshop - Glaze Technology (Intermediate) with Duncan Shearer

Saturday 8th March, 9am - 4pm

This glaze course is focused on understanding the materials that are used in making up a glaze, including any health risks associated with a particular material. We examine the role materials play in the glaze and pitfalls that can occur when trying to substitute materials. We also have a go at making up test trials that will illustrate how to go about the process and also how to design a test series to reveal useful information. This will also cover how to analyse your results.

We’ll explore different sources of glaze recipes and what to watch out for before making up a new glaze. Glaze slop behaviour and getting a more reliable glazing experience is also covered.

Art Market Opportunity

St Peter’s Cathedral is holding an Autumn Gala to raise funds for mandatory earthquake strengthening.

All artists and crafts-people are invited to submit up to four pieces for sale at the Gala, with the full price of one piece being donated towards the fundraising efforts, and the remaining three to be sold on commission at 20%.

If you’re interested in submitting pieces to this cause, you can find entry forms on the notice board here in the WSP studio, or you can email the Gala coordinator, Ann Harlow, directly.

The deadline for entries is the 20th of February, and artworks can be delivered to the Cathedral from the 3rd to the 6th of March. The Gala itself takes place on Saturday the 8th of March.
