Artist's Talk with Rick Rudd MNZM
Friday 1st May, 6pm onwards
Waikato Society of Potters Studio
Join us for a rare and inspiring evening with Rick Rudd, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most celebrated ceramic artists.
🍽 Pot Luck kai — Bring a dish to share.
💛 Entry by Koha — All proceeds support the Quartz Museum of Studio Ceramics and its mission to preserve, celebrate, and uplift ceramic art in Aotearoa.
British-born and trained at Wolverhampton College of Art (Diploma of Art and Design, Ceramics, 1972), Rick has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s ceramics community since settling here in 1973. Over five decades he has exhibited nationally and internationally, received numerous awards, and contributed significantly to the field—including serving as President of the New Zealand Society of Potters (1988–91). In 2020 he was awarded a MNZM for services to ceramic art.
Rick’s works are held in major collections across the motu, including Auckland Museum, Waikato Museum, The Dowse, Te Manawa, Christchurch Art Gallery, MTG Hawke’s Bay, the Sarjeant Gallery, and more.
In 2013 Rick established the Rick Rudd Foundation, gifting his building and extensive personal collection to create a lasting public resource. This vision led to the opening of the Quartz Museum of Studio Ceramics in Whanganui in 2015—the only dedicated museum for studio ceramics in Aotearoa and home to a remarkable collection of around 4,500 works. Quartz continues to grow, inspire, and provide vital support for the next generation of makers.
Come share food, community, and an extraordinary opportunity to hear directly from one of New Zealand’s most influential ceramic voices. We’d love to see you there!
Elemental Dialogues: a collaborative exhibition by duo Ginny Lane and Richard Jackson
Opening Thursday 19th March, 4.30pm
Exhibition open until 13th April
Artspost, Hamilton
This exhibition presents the work of woodturner Richard and potter Ginny. Although both artists work primarily with different materials, they understand how forms and finishes may come together to enhance disparate materials; a form of alchemy emerging where their practices converge.
Richard's turned vessels explore the inherent grain and warmth of timber, while Ginny's forms explore the malleability of clay, and the unpredictability of the firing process. A dialogue ensues which challenges each artist to work in new ways to accommodate the distinctive qualities of each other's medium. The resulting form is a symbiosis of two mediums melded into one.
Paul Maseyk Jugs in New Zealand Painting
20th March 2026 - 19th July 2026
The Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery
Paul Maseyk’s latest exhibition is an exploration of New Zealand painting through the lens of ceramic art.
Known for his distinctive style and technical skill, Maseyk has created a series of ceramic jugs inspired by vessels depicted in paintings from some of Aotearoa’s most celebrated artists.
Each jug is displayed alongside the painting that inspired it, either on loan or reproduced from collections across Aotearoa.
The result is a unique conversation between mediums, inviting visitors to consider the everyday objects that populate our visual culture.
