Holiday hours

It's the Easter long weekend so we won't be keeping our usual hours at the studio. Some of us are looking forward to a rest. Don't worry though, if you aren't heading off for a break away from home you can still get your clay fix over the weekend, thanks to our absolutely amazing volunteers Teresa and Tim.

Friday: Closed
Saturday: 10am-1pm Play with Clay
Sunday: Closed
Monday: Closed

WSP at Orange and other studio business

So we have moved to the Orange traffic light in New Zealand. This doesn't mean there is much change for us in the studio. There are a few areas that people haven't been sure about:

  • Distancing - We're still maintaining a manageable 1m distancing which is why we are still using a booking system for Play With Clay and Open Studio. It also means that there may be times when volunteers decide they have to cap the numbers.
  • Bringing friends - If you come to PWC with friends, please be respectful of those who aren't in your group. It means one person to a wheel, so that your friends aren't gathered around you and encroaching on the 1m space around the neighbouring wheel or blocking the pathways.
  • Masks - everybody is still wearing masks in the studio. We have vulnerable people at the studio and want to look after all of you, so please continue to wear masks when in the studio. There will be very little tolerance for people who take them off in the studio and we appreciate your cooperation.

Subsidised rates for Play with Clay and Open Studio

We don't want the extra cost to become the barrier for anyone accessing the arts. This is why we have been working to increase access, like with the free children's classes in Term 2 and upcoming free teens workshops (coming soon).

We recently had to increase our Play With Clay and Open Studio fees for the first time. This was necessary to help us meet the shortfall as the costs of our overheads have risen over the years. However, we are conscious that the fee rise might mean that for some, following a passion has become unaffordable.

If financial hardship is preventing you attending Play with Clay or Open Studio, you may qualify for a susidised rate. There is a form on the Learn page of our website, under the PWC heading. If you wish to apply for the subsidised rate, please complete it and we will be in touch. You can also contact Sarah directly (manager@waikatopotters.co.nz). All information provided will be held in the strictest confidence.

Tutors wanted

Are you keen to share your skills? We are on the look-out for an additional tutor who can teach both hand-building and wheel throwing.

We are looking for a tutor with a little flexibility who enjoys working with school children, teenagers, and community groups. Sometimes sessions are at the studio, but often we have requests for a tutor to visit schools or other groups around Hamilton. There may be an opportunity for a Term class on a week day and/or Sundays for the right tutor. Work would be as an independent contractor.

Please get in touch with Sarah if you think this might be for you and would like to talk more about the possibilities.

There's still time (for WSP members) to book a market stall space to sell your ceramics. Let your friends know they can come and have a go on the wheel or making a planter or something else. And we would be glad to have more volunteers. If you can spare a few hours on the day, please get in touch.
