Annual exhibition

Hey team! Entries close soon for our annual member's exhibition. It's an opportunity for us to showcase the work of our potters, both new and experienced, a time to come together and simply celebrate each other. Sure, there are some prizes, but it isn't about the competition. We just want to celebrate each other and show the Waikato what a great, creative and welcoming place we have.

Please, please, please do submit an entry or two. It might be a functional mug, a vase, a decorative tile, a tiny sculpture or a giant one, something whimsical or something high brow! We just would love a piece of your creativity. Entries close 6 October but you don't have to deliver until 12/13 October.

New classes are open for booking

Thank you for your patience. There have been a lot of queries about the Term 4 classes and because we had to run the current term classes later due to lockdown, there was some juggling to be done. In addition, some people kindly delayed their learning journeys to allow us to reduce class sized to ensure Level 2 distancing requirements could be met.
Most of the new classes are up online now, just a few details to confirm on a couple of others which will be announced on Monday.
Class numbers continue to be reduced at Level 2. If this changes before class begins, we will make a few more spaces available. In the meantime, it means that some classes have very few free spaces, so hop on quickly to secure a space to avoid missing out.

* If you volunteered to move from a Term 3 to a Term 4 class and have not received a confirmation of your new class, please get in touch with Sarah or Stephen to make sure you are booked in.

Studio access over the next week

We will find out on Monday evening if the COVID restrictions will change next week. In the meantime, we are just planning for the status quo. If Monday evening brings better news, we will adjust accordingly.

Saturday studio spaces are all fully booked now. The amazing Teresa has volunteered to come in tomorrow morning. If you have drop-offs and pick-ups to do, pop in between 10am and 1pm. Otherwise, sorry, there are no remaining glazing or studio spaces remaining.

Next week

You know the drill now.
  • To book a glazing spot, contact Stephen by email or phone 07 838 1950.
  • There are limited studio spaces which can be booked in advance. Check our EventsPronto page to book space.
  • Pop in to drop off or pick up work at the following times:
    • Monday 10am-4pm
    • Tuesday 1-4pm
    • Wednesday 10am-4pm

Woodfiring 5-7 November 2021

The October woodfiring has had to be rescheduled for the first weekend in November. There are still some spaces left. If you'd like to spend the weekend bonding with other potters around the Phoenix, we would love to have you along for the ride.
New woodfirers are welcome. You need to commit to mucking in on at least 2 of the 3 days, but you are guaranteed to learn heaps, have fun and have some unexpected surprises at the end.

Something for this weekend

Welcome Swallow Exhibition, Ambiguity 1st October - 5th November 2021

If you are on the hunt for some culture to soak up in the coming days, this exhibition is launching this evening and running until 5 November. One of the featured artists is Sylvia Sinel who has been tutoring here at WSP on Thursday afternoons.

Take your career to the next level!

Some of our members, including tutors and artists-in-residence are doing this programme and have said that it is amazing. There are a few spots left on the next intake of Creative Waikato's Elevate programme. The next workshop series starts on October 5th (Hamilton based), and November 3rd (online based).
Creative Waikato is running a free programme called Elevate. Elevate is designed to help people turn their passions into creative careers. Over a period of 9 months, participants attend a series of workshops and are mentored towards their chosen creative career goal. There's more information here: www.elevatecreative.co.nz
They have an option for people to do the workshops and mentor meetings face to face in Hamilton, or online via Zoom if that suits them better. Participants go through the programme in a group, so there is lots of peer learning involved.
